FOP's Collective Bargaining Bill Reintroduced in Senate (reprinted from FOP Grand Lodge website 04/13/2010) Chuck Canterbury, National President of the Fraternal Order of Police, hailed the introduction of S. 3194, the "Public Safety Employer-Employee Cooperation Act," an updated version of H.R. 413 and S. 1611 reflecting changes that had been agreed to as the bill moved forward. "Senate leadership is readying this legislation for a vote," Canterbury said. "Reintroducing the bill makes it easier from a procedural perspective. Floor votes in the Senate can be arduous and protracted so we want to limit the ability of the bill's opponents to play parliamentary games." The new bill was introduced by the Senate Majority Leader, Senator Harry M. Reid (D-NV), a former U.S. Capitol Police Officer. "Senator Reid and the original sponsor of the bill, Senator Judd Gregg (R-NH), have been working very hard to get this bill through the Senate," Canterbury said. "They have been true champions for us, and we are deeply appreciative for their support and leadership on this issue." The legislation, which recognizes the right of public safety employees to form and join unions and to bargain collectively with their employers, passed the House in the previous Congress on an overwhelming 314-97 vote. In 2008, the legislation also won a strong majority in the Senate during a procedural "test vote," though efforts to move the bill were ultimately thwarted by parliamentary tactics. In this Congress, the House companion bill, H.R. 413, was discharged from the Committee on Education and Labor without a vote to expedite its consideration on the House floor–which could be as early as the end of this month. "This bill is moving, and I am confident that it will pass and that the FOP and our colleagues at the International Association of Fire Fighters will be able to join the President at a signing ceremony before the end of this Congress," Canterbury said. "Our two groups have worked long and hard for more than a decade to enact this legislation, and the finish line is in sight!"

MEETING REMINDER Our March 2010 FOP General Membership meeting will be held on Thursday, March 11, 2010 at Our Lady of the Rosary School Cafeteria, located at 1342 Moss St. Entrance and parking is available off Esplanade Avenue. Chef John Schluter will serve a buffet-style dinner at 6:30PM, and the meeting will begin at 7:00PM. MEMBERSHIP CARDS AND DECALS As most of you have figured out by now, the annual mail out of FOP membership cards and window decals has been delayed. Our lodge ordered 5000 decals from the Grand Lodge vendor, and upon their arrival in early January, we discovered that the decals were defective. We've been working with the vendor on a solution to this problem, and were notified late last week that all 5000 decals will be replaced with a new shipment. The vendor informs us that the manufacturer will be shipping new decals on March 12th, and we should expect delivery of the replacement decals in the week following. As soon as the new decals are received, the 2010 Membership Cards and window decals will be mailed to all members.
